Transport Information - Getting to and from the City2Surf

Public transport is the best way to get to the start of the City2Surf and home again.

Your entry into City2Surf includes travel to and from the event. That’s right! On Sunday, August 8, 2010 you won't have to pay any extra if you show your race bib when you board CityRail trains, regular State Transit Authority buses, special event buses from Bondi Beach, Liverpool to Parramatta T-way buses and Sydney Ferries.
Private bus services are not included in the travel entitlement.

Making public transport the best way to get to the start of  the race – an a hassle-free trip home.

Getting to the start of the race
The best way to plan your trip is to visit 131500 or call 131 500. When planning your travel to the start of the race, you should enter your destination as follows:

• SH1 (Red) Start Group : St James or Museum station, entry via the central avenue of Hyde Park
• SH2 (Green) Start Group: St James, Museum or Town Hall Station, enter Park St via Elizabeth St
• Blue Start Group: Museum Station or Hyde Park South, via Oxford Street
• Yellow Start Group: St James Station, Queens Square exit, or Hyde Park North, St James Road.
• Orange Start Group: Martin Place Station

Buses are replacing trains on the Western and Blue Mountain Lines between Blacktown and Lithgow stations.

RailCorp have confirmed that a bus will be leaving Katoomba Railway station at 5.00am. This bus will proceed to Glenbrook station arriving approximately 6am to pick up any further passengers and will then proceed directly to the city.

Another bus will leave Springwood station at 5.30am. This bus will pick up at Blaxland Railway Station approximately 10-15 minutes later and will then proceed direct to the city.

RailCorp staff will be available to assist passengers and the buses will be marked "City2Surf".

Manly Ferry - an additional ferry has been added on Sunday, August 8. Departing Manly at 7.00am.

Getting home from the race

There are some changes to bus services after the race this year to reduce queues and make the trip faster. All special event buses from Bondi Beach will only go to Bondi Junction – there will be no special buses to the city. You can catch a special event bus from Bondi Beach, south of Lamrock Avenue. Hop off at Bondi Junction station and catch another bus or one of the extra trains that will be operating.

Remember you won’t have to pay to travel on public transport on race day if you show your chest bib!

Don’t forget, you must show your Chest Bib to gain access onto transport.

Non-participants
You will need a valid ticket to travel to and from this event. The best way to plan your trip is to visit 131500. If you’re travelling as a family, you can purchase a $2.50 Family Funday Sunday ticket for each family member.

Road closures

Road closures for the City2Surf extend from the CBD along the 14km route to Bondi Beach. All roads will be re-opened by 4pm. For detailed traffic information visit the RTA website.

Information about private coaches

If you are coming to the start in a private coach please carefully research your route and the best spot to be dropped off. Remember there are many road closures and the street you were thinking of may be unavailable.

Non-STA buses and coaches (if they have not made prior parking arrangements) are asked to lay up in O’ Sullivan Road, Rose Bay.
The eastern (golf course) side is preferred. Access to this area can be made directly from New South Head Road. However, if New South Head Road has already closed for the race, coaches will need to take the following route, Syd Einfeld Drive, Old South Head Road, Victoria Road, Birriga Road, Bundarra Road to the intersection of Plumer and O’Sullivan.

Groups once they are all ready to be collected can arrange for their bus to come into the Bondi area. A designated pick up space is provided in Curlewis Street, adjacent to Gould Street. This is strictly policed as a temporary lay up spot, so please ensure your group is all in position to be collected.

Information about private cars

All participants are encouraged to catch public transport to the start of the race.  We also encourage entrants NOT to park within the Bondi area. There are very limited parking options in Bondi and cars illegally parked will be fined.

If you are having someone come to Bondi to pick you, please remind them that are many road closures and special event clearways on race day. In light of these road closures, the ideal pick-up spot on any normal weekend may not be available on The Sun-Herald City2Surf race day.

The length of time that roads are close for on the day is dependant upon the race conditions. The RTA Traffic Management Centre will have details of all road closures and special event clearways closer to race day. They can be contacted on their 24 hour hotline 132 701.

If you are going to drive the Domain Car Park is opening at the earlier time of 7am to accommodate entrants. Pre book online

Timing Tags

Timing Tags were introduced in 2008 Sun-Herald City2Surf as an accurate way to measure your NET time  during the race. The timing tag needs to be affixed to your shoelace. See below for step-by-step instructions.

When you cross over the mat at the starting line, the timer will be activated. The timer will remain active for the entire race. Once crossing the finish line, your timer will stop recording.

Don’t worry if you are starting at the back-of-the-pack. The timer only commences once you cross the mat at the starting line.

*Please note if you start ahead of your allocated start category then your timing tag will not be activated and you will receive an automatic disqualification from the race.

*Also to note that the timing tags DO NOT need to be returned after the race.

Step-by-step instructions for fixing your timing tag
Please follow these step-by-step instructions on how to fix your timing tag to your shoelace:

You can tie your tag into your shoelaces as securely as you like, either by just untying your laces normally, threading the tag on and then tying them back up again. Or, if you are nervous about your laces coming undone, you can take the laces out of the top set of eyelets, thread the tag onto them and then redo the laces through the tags to make absolutely certain your tag doesn't come off.

Using either method, REMEMBER TO ONLY THREAD YOUR LACES THROUGH THE TOP TWO HOLES ON THE TAG

Please see the photo sequence below:

Step 1: Loosen your laces

Step 2: Thread the tag onto your laces.
Use the top two holes only!

Step 3: Secure the tag with your laces

Step 4: Get ready to run!

* Please note that the tags will not be collected at the finish this year, they are yours to keep.

General Health

NSW Health advises that anyone including those training or participating in the City to Surf, who is unwell with influenza-like symptoms (including fever, chills, sore throat, cough, tiredness, muscle aches, headache or shortness of breath) or any other illness between now and on the day of the City to Surf should stay at home and avoid close contact with others until their symptoms are gone.

People who are unwell in the next few weeks for any reason are strongly advised to re-assess their participation in the event and should talk to their doctor if they have any questions.

It is important for all participants to remember to properly hydrate with fluids before, during and after the race. August weather can be unseasonably cool or warm and all participants and spectators should dress appropriately for the conditions. Unlike cotton, many synthetic fabrics will dry quickly and keep you warm when wet.

Sleep Survey
The University of Sydney are conducting a survey on Sleep and Exercise. After you participate in the City2Surf help researchers by completing the online questions here
